Overview

A group of individuals on the UWeb listserv expressed interest in trying to start a group to talk about platform and language-independent programming concepts. Ideas such as Service-Oriented-Architecture, Test-Driven-Development, and other concepts that extend past the boundaries of any one programming language were brought up.

This brought about the Programmers' Forum, a collection of developers wanting to further their knowledge of programming without having to join a particular language-specific User Group. The group has expressed interest in having meetings roughly twice a month, mainly in the evenings. At least one of the meetings should be strictly social-based - no particular agenda.

Topics

Topics to be presented at meetings should not be geared towards a specific product (unless the product works on all platforms) and certainly not restrictive to only a certain language. The atmosphere of the talks is calm and relaxed. Individuals get up and present, then others show examples from several different languages, and have a talk with all attendees about it afterwards to try to get developers engaged in understanding the concept and pointing out flaws or problems and noting the pluses of the topic.

Membership

Your first born... I mean it's free and open to everyone in the Bryan / College Station (and surrounding) area. We don't have any overhead costs (no dinners or free booze, unfortunately), so we don't have to charge for membership. Can't (or don't want) to come to a meeting? Be that way - we don't want you anyway. (j/k - we don't have RSVPs for meetings - it's come as you are and come if you can).

Call for Presenters

The Programmers' Forum is looking for different talkers so we can try to setup a schedule at least a couple of months in advance. If you have a concept that you're wanting to talk about, email the UWeb Listserv or Chris Weldon and we'll see whether your topic is worthy of us picky programmers. :-P

Vendors: The group hasn't expressed opposition to having vendors present to the Programmers' Forum, but there's one expectation from everyone: you pay for the food (and the booze, please?). If you're interested in giving a product presentation, email Chris Weldon to discuss the product / service you are presenting, scheduling, and whether the group wants you there.
